Diddle My Skittle (LA) 2024
The artist Anne Duk Hee Jordan juxtaposes the political dominance of men with a hybrid soft creature. Her work „Diddle My Skittle" explores patriarchal structures in a system drenched in toxic masculinity, power games and aggression. „Diddle My Skittle“ is the artistic approach to an alternative world order where sensuality and female playfulness take over rigidness.
Initially conceived 2022 in a response to the Russian invasion in Ukraine, the AR work features a flying manta ray-like creature engulfing Moscow's Kremlin Tower and thus challenging male symbols and power structures. This creature, revealing itself as a female genitalia, serves as a potent metaphor for subverting the norms of male dominance.
The narrative continues at the US Supreme Court in Washington during the abortion law voting, where the new target are conservative jurists. A further version of the work is on view in front of the Reichstag in Germany, where it dismantles Berlin’s Victory Column (Siegessäule). Expanding her geographic and thematic scope, Jordan introduces "Diddle My Skittle (LA)“, absorbing the Hollywood Sign of old male Hollywood and celebrating a new beginning.
Can we blame Hollywood for its model role in a world full of crises? With its factories for films and dreams, Hollywood exerts a major influence on society and politics far beyond the movie curtains. The gender inequity and male gaze in film industry dominate the content of new productions and give a devastating example to the real world, where male supremacy in politics, society and business strikes each one of us.
Jordan's work is renown for her engagement in gender studies, but also for the interconnectedness of humans and nonhumans, sexuality, nutrition and ecology. The presentation of "Diddle My Skittle (LA)“ at Venice Beach is a continuation of her journey in challenging societal norms and inviting audiences globally to engage in a dialogue about the role of women in today's world too.
Anne Duk Hee Jordan (1978 South Korea) lives in Berlin and is professor for media arts at the HfG Academy in Karlsruhe. She is a graduate of Olafur Eliasson’s Institute for Spacial Experiments at University of the Arts in Berlin and is recipient of numerous international awards. Recently her work was on view in solo exhibitions at HEK Basel (2023), Kolbe Museum Berlin (2023), Baltic Art Center Stockholm (2022), Kiosk Ghent (2022), Urania Berlin (2022), in addition to major presentations at Gwangju Biennale (2023) and Momenta Biennale Montreal (2021). In the US her work is currently on view at the Bass Museum in Miami with the solo exhibition „I will always weather with you“ (until June 23th 2024). This autumn she will have her first solo show in New York with Canal Projects.
„Diddle My Skittle (LA)“ is a new commission by Goethe Institut Los Angeles.

About
About
Augmented Studies is an AR program exporing the potential of Augmented Reality for cultural interaction.
Our research is currently focused on the development of the new artistic genre of Augmented Reality. We work on a series of public art projects and develop a collaborative program for the production and presentation of Contemporary Art via Augmented Reality (AR). Launched 2018 as an educational project in Berlin, the program operates now internationally in support of artists and institutions.
